info: The squirrel cleaned out our bird feeder and then was too full to move. My wife came and got me. I couldn't believe he was still there after I got my camera and switched lenses.

info: These are White-Cheeked Gibbons. The white gibbon was consoling the other for quite some time.

The Primate house at the Brookfield Zoo was great. I'd go so as far as saying it was the best part of the zoo. The only trouble is that it was somewhat overcast and the lighting in the house was very poor. Had to shoot most shots at ISO 400 or 800 with the lens wide over and a shutter speed of 1/15 to 1/50. A lot of the monkeys were very active but all the action shots came out blurred.

video: Octopuses are thought to be one of the most intelligent invertebrates and can change the color and texture of their skin to blend in with rocks, algae, or coral to avoid predators. But until now, an octopus with the ability to actually assume the appearance of another animal had never been observed.

"Having studied many octopus species in the wild, I am never surprised by the color and shape change capacities of these animals," said Mark Norman of the Melbourne Museum in Australia. "However, this animal stood out as it was the only one we've encountered that goes beyond camouflage to take on the guise of dangerous animals."

Norman and fellow researchers Julian Finn of the University of Tasmania in Australia and Tom Tregenza of the University of Leeds in England describe the octopus mimic in the September 7 issue of Proceedings of the Royal Society of London.

"This," Tregenza said, "is a rather dramatic animal."

Talented Impersonator

Mimicry is a fairly common survival strategy in nature. Certain flies, for example, assume the black and yellow stripes of bees as a warning to potential predators. But the adaptable octopus is the first known species that can assume multiple guises.

picture description: "News about our sweetheart Mimo the Bunny: we brought him to a home for animals and they kept him in order to bring him up and return him to the wild - Mimo, namely is a hare and cannot survive as a pet.

We've also been told that he was only one day old when we found him and that it is common for adult hares to leave their babies anywhere. They come back every 12 hours approximately to feed them and leave again. The reason they leave their babies at different spots is for security reasons in case the little ones are attacked by some animal...

This basically means that we should not have taken this cutie in but I don't regret it since I saw the circumstances he was in and there was no escape for him anyway. That is why I am still sure that we saved his life.

A newborn hare is about 120g heavy, Mimo had 102 when we brought him to his new home. We hope that he will soon recover and will visit him soon. By the way, his cute tiny ears will become as long as his body in one week only. In one month he will be 1kg heavy and will be returned to the wild.

We will never ever forget him!"
